Green Indonesia environmental education program has been developed for Indonesian primary and junior high schools in 2013. During 30 lessons children learn about the principles of 3R, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, the principles of Circular Economy, Food loss & Food Waste, the importance of waste separation at household and school level and how to manage a recyclables collection point in school. The program is introduced to schools in collaboration with local governmental Education Departments by 2-day teacher trainings.
Educating children about the importance of waste in environment and encouraging them to not litter needs to go hand in hand with the establishment of local waste infrastructure, in order to give practical solutions on how to manage their waste.
In Indonesia 45% of the population lives in rural communities spread out over 17.000+ islands and establishing waste infrastructure in these remote regions and communities so far remains a challenge. Most villages are located beyond the reach of the urban waste collection systems. In addition many communities are situated along rivers, which provide them with water. Littering in rivers is common and riverine waste is one of the major sources of ocean pollution.
To support extension of the recyclables network we developed the concept of recyclables collection point in school. Schools are one central point in any community. The school can function as a collection point for recyclables, from both the school as well as community.
We collaborate with ADUPI – the Indonesian Plastic Recycling Association – for connecting the schools to the wider Indonesian recycling network.
